Pretty much at any given time you can find a rotisserie chicken in my fridge. Until this easy rotisserie chicken recipe I always had to get my chicken pre-made from the grocery store. You know the ones I’m talking about, the hit or miss chickens you get from a bag. I wanted to keep the convenience of having rotisserie chicken at my disposal but wanted freshness and quality that is sometimes missing with the bag chicken.

So I started searching for rotisserie chicken recipe ideas and came across this delicious recipe. Who knew you could make rotisserie chicken in the slow cooker? The result is a perfectly moist and tender chicken that can be seasoned any way you wish. Roast it at the end for crispy skin or you can remove the skin before cooking for a lower calorie option. Simple and delicious.

This healthy slow cooker rotisserie chicken recipe makes the perfect quick lunch or dinner and there are a million and one ways to jazz it up in recipes. Tacos, salads, lettuce wraps, quick soups, pasta, the options are endless. 

Tips and Tricks

To prevent the chicken from burning or sticking to the bottom of your crock pot you will want to make 3 to 5 balls of tin foil for the bottom. You can also use 3-5 small potatoes you can also wrap them in the tinfoil and place those in the bottom of the slow cooker. Then you have a side dish as well.

Most of the time we make slow cooker meals because we know we won’t have time to cook in the evening. However, there is a way to prep this meal even more quickly.

  • Prep the spice rub ahead of time - this will allow you to be able to just toss the chicken in the crock pot when you are ready to start cooking it.
  • Cook on high approximately 4 hours - this healthy rotisserie chicken recipe calls for cooking it on low for 8 hours. To decrease the amount of time it takes to cook it just increase the heat to high. Always check for an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for poultry prior to serving.

Change it up:

Really this rotisserie chicken recipe idea can be modified for about any flavor. If you prefer Italian toss on your favorite Italian seasonings. Want something more Mexican in flavor grab your cumin and taco seasonings. The flavor possibilities are only as limited as your imagination and taste buds!

Tossing in some of your favorite vegetables can liven things up a bit as well. Consider adding mushrooms and onions about half an hour before you are ready to serve the chicken. Small red potatoes are full of flavor from soaking in the seasonings and juice from the chicken.

  • 3 lb whole chicken, cleaned with fat removed
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 U lemon

Make 3-5 aluminum balls and place in the bottom of the slow cooker. You can also wrap 3-5 small potatoes in the tinfoil and place those in the bottom of the slow cooker.


Mix together all of the spices and add the juice of the lemon. Rub the spice rub all over the chicken.


Stuff the lemon into the chicken cavity and place on top of the aluminum foil balls or wrapped potatoes.


Cook on low for 8 hours.


Optional: For crispy skin, preheat the oven to 500 degrees and roast the chicken for 10 minutes before serving to crisp up the skin.
