This is one of my favorite dishes to make for kids. Not only do they love how it tastes, its healthy and packed with hidden veggies. The whole dish comes together in under 20 minutes and its likely that you have everything you need at home already. Serve it up as a traditional Sloppy Joe sandwich or serve it over rice, couscous, baked potatoes, polenta, or spaghetti squash.

Ingredients

US METRICS
  • 2 tsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • 1 U red pepper, minced
  • 1 U green pepper, minced
  • 1 lb. 99% lean ground turkey
  • 2 U garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup canned tomato sauce ( no sugar added)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup (low sugar)
  • 1/4 cup bbq sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

Add the olive oil to a pan over medium heat. Add the onion and peppers. Cook for 5-7 minutes until tender.

Add the turkey and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and no longer pink. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, and mustard. Stir together.

Simmer for 10 minutes and season with salt and pepper if needed.
