This Healthy Honey Mustard is creamy, sweet, rich, and incredibly easy to make. Made with just a few simple ingredients, this decadent recipe is sure to be your new go-to for dressing your salads, loading up your wraps, and even dipping your chicken nuggets in.

Honey mustard sauce has always been a favorite of mine. When I was a kid, I used it as a dipping sauce for my fries and chicken nuggets. Once I moved into adulthood, I used more refined versions as dressings for my salads. (Okay, fine, I still use it for dunking my chicken nuggets!) Nevertheless, honey mustard has always held a special place in my heart (and in my belly).

As with so many of the foods we love, store-bought honey mustard isn’t exactly the healthiest choice. I’m passionate about recreating the not-so-healthy things I love in healthier ways, and this Healthy Honey Mustard recipe is a definite winner. Just like the honey mustard sauce, I grew up loving, this recipe is sweet, tangy, and luxuriously creamy.

Whether you’re in need of a delicious new dipping sauce for your baked potato wedges or a mouthwatering salad dressing to impress your friends this summer, you’ve come to the right place. This versatile sauce is guaranteed to knock your socks off. Dressing lovers also won't want to miss this Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing and Ranch.

Key Ingredients and Easy Swaps

The key ingredients you will need for this dish include:

  • Greek yogurt: I use nonfat plain Greek yogurt for this recipe. It’s packed with protein and loaded with probiotics that help support a healthy gut! Regular or low fat Greek yogurt, plain yogurt, or soy yogurt all work.
  • Dijon mustard: This is where we get the amazing tangy mustard flavor that has me drooling every time I make this sauce. Regular mustard and whole grain mustard can work, but the flavor and texture will change.
  • Mayonnaise: This helps make our sauce extra smooth and creamy. It’s commonly used in most honey mustard recipes, but we use a smaller amount and combine it with Greek yogurt for a healthier twist. You could swap in sour cream.
  • Honey: It wouldn’t be honey mustard without the honey! You can adjust the measurement on this one and add more if you like your honey mustard on the sweeter side. Maple syrup will also work.
  • Lemon juice: This brightens up the rest of the flavors in our sauce and helps it stay fresher for longer. If you don’t have lemon juice, swap in white vinegar.

Ways to Use Honey Mustard

Here are some of my favorite serving styles and substitutions for this dish:

  • Use this sauce as a dip for raw vegetables, chicken, pork, fries, or roasted potatoes.
  • To use this sauce as a salad dressing, simply use it as is or thin it out with a little more lemon juice or water.
  • Try this sauce as a marinade or glaze for grilled or roasted chicken or pork.
  • Use this sauce as a spread for tasty sandwiches and wraps.
  • Drizzle this sauce on top of tacos or roasted vegetables.

Recipe Ideas and Variations

There are lots of ways to customize this homemade honey mustard sauce and make it your own.

  • If you don’t have any fresh lemons at home, you can substitute the lemon juice for apple cider vinegar or white distilled vinegar instead.
  • To add a little heat to the sauce, you can add in a pinch of cayenne pepper or use hot paprika in place of regular paprika.
  • I like to use nonfat Greek yogurt, but you can also use low-fat or full fat Greek yogurt if you prefer that instead.
  • I find that it’s easiest to mix the ingredients together with a whisk, but you could also use a spoon or fork.

How to Store Homemade Dressing

To store this dish, simply transfer it to an airtight container like a mason jar. When stored properly, it should stay fresh in the fridge for up to 10-12 days. Due to the dairy-based ingredients in the dish, I would not advise attempting to freeze it. Luckily, it’s super easy to make and can be whipped up in a pinch whenever you’re ready for more!

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this vibrant dish:

Is honey mustard healthy?

Absolutely. By making honey mustard from scratch, you avoid all the unhealthy fats, preservatives, and artificial ingredients commonly found in the store-bought versions. This recipe is simply made with wholesome ingredients and is a perfectly healthy addition to any diet.

How do you store this dish?

I have found that the best way to store sauces like this one is in a mason jar or some other type of glass container. This keeps it freshest for the longest amount of time, but any airtight container will work as well. It should keep in the fridge for 10-12 days.

Can you freeze this dish?

Due to the fact that there are dairy-based ingredients in this sauce, I would refrain from freezing it. Dairy tends to separate when frozen, meaning that once it’s thawed out you will wind up with a runny, lumpy mess.

What do you eat with honey mustard?

Anything you want! Some of my favorite foods to eat with honey mustard include chicken, sweet potato fries, roasted or raw vegetables, salads, and sandwiches. You could even use the sauce as a glaze for grilled chicken or pork, yum!

Is honey good for you?

Yes, honey is a delicious ingredient used in countless sauces, dips, and dressings, but did you know that it’s also incredibly good for you? This natural sweetener has been used as medicine since ancient times and is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Ancient Egyptians even used honey as a topical treatment to heal burns and wounds. According to Healthline, these are some of the most impressive health benefits of honey:

  • Acts as a natural cough suppressant
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Supports a healthy digestive system
