Last week I was seriously craving some Asian takeout. There is this amazing place near our house that makes Hoisin Pork noodles that are ridiculously good. However, given the puddle of grease on the plate, they are definitely not the healthiest option. For the past few weeks, I have been working on creating my own version of this pork recipe at home. It took a couple of weeks, but I finally came out with a version we all love.

The stir-fry sauce for the pork is made with a combination of soy sauce, honey garlic, ginger, lime juice, rice vinegar, and lots of hoisin sauce.  To get maximum flavor, I like to marinate the pork in this mixture as well. After that, it's simple. The pork, veggies, and the marinade get quickly cooked in a skillet. During this time the marinade will thicken and turn into a nice sauce. It will also boil, thus eliminating any worry about serving a marinade that was used with raw pork.

What is Hoisin?

Hoisin is a sauce that's synonymous with Asian cooking. Sweet, salty, spicy, thick, fragrant, and dark red, Hoisin is made from vinegar, soy sauce, sesame, garlic, lime, and various other spices. It's used as a marinade or glaze for meat (like this recipe calls for) or can be used as an added sauce to other Asian dishes, like stir-fries or soups or as a dipping sauce for spring or egg rolls.

How Can I Make Hoisin Spicy?

To make this dish spicy, I recommend adding a couple red chilis to the marinade, sprinkling red pepper flakes on the finished dish, or serving with Asian hot sauces, like Sriracha or chili oil.

Side Dishes to Serve with Hoisin Pork Stir Fry

This dish can be a meal in and of itself, but if you'd like something to go along nicely with it, I'd recommend:

  • A nice side of Edamame or Sesame Green Beans are just the things to complement your Hoisin Pork.
  • Whip up a few Baked Veggie Egg Rolls to have as an appetizer or on the side of your main dish.
  • A hearty side salad works well in most situations and you'll be upping your nutrition intake if you stick to a healthy version.
  • Add a side of Cauliflower Rice to add in a carb-free, rice-like component to your meal.
  • Add a cup of egg drop soup to this meal for extra warmth on a cold day.
  • Double up on the Hoisin marinade and put some aside for marinating other veggies like asparagus, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts.

Ideas for Customizing Hoisin Pork

This dish is so versatile and customizable. If you don't like something, swap it out!

  • If you don't have fresh ginger, you can use powdered, but be careful to not overdo it as dried herbs are more potent.
  • Mix up your cabbages — you can use green, red, or even throw in some sliced bok choy.
  • If you don't like broccoli, try adding green beans or Brussels sprouts instead.
  • Thinly sliced celery or water chestnuts would also work well in this dish, adding a nice crunchy texture.
  • If you don't want to use pork, you can use chicken, beef, tofu, or shrimp in this dish as well. It would also be really tasty with some Asian pork meatballs instead of tenderloin.
  • If cabbage as a base isn't going to do it for you, use brown rice or cauliflower rice instead.
  • Zucchini noodles or other zoodles would also work well with, or instead of the other vegetables.
  • Make extra of this dish to meal prep for the week. Pack in separate microwave-safe containers in your fridge and enjoy as a healthy, on-the-go meal all week long.

Can I Freeze this Recipe?

Yes, you can freeze this dish. I would recommend using airtight Ziploc bags or containers and freezing up to two months. Be aware that some of the veggies might be a little softer than when you made this dish originally. Because this happens, I sometimes make a fresh batch of the cabbage to add to the Hoisin pork and vegetables after they are thawed and cooked. It still saves time, but it gives it a fresher taste than just straight out of the freezer.
