  • 1.5 lbs 93% lean ground turkey (or ground beef)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1 potato, peeled and diced small
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 3 jalapenos (kept whole)
  • 14 oz can tomato sauce
  • 4 tbsp. chipotle peppers in adobo (adjust to taste)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and Pepper

Step 1Brown the turkey and onion in a skillet until no longer pink. In the last 1 minute of cooking, add the garlic,s alt, and and spices.

Step 2Meanwhile, blend together the tomato sauce and chipotles, adding the peppers one at a time until it reaches your desired spice level. If you want to skip this step and prefer a milder sauce, simply use the liquid from the can and stir it into the sauce to taste.

Step 3Add the turkey, potatoes, carrots, and chipotle tomato sauce to the slow cooker. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours.

Step 4Serve with fresh cilantro. Picadillo is normally eaten with rice and corn tortillas.
