Shrimp Fra Diavolo
Shrimp Fra Diavolo is a restaurant dish you can make at home in just 20 minutes with succulent shrimp served in a spicy, delicious tomato sauce.
What you need:
- 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, sliced thin
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 14 oz fire roasted diced tomatoes (or tomato sauce)
- 1 tsp Calabrian chilies (or red pepper flakes, more to taste)
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley
- 2 tbsp fresh basil
Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Toss in a large bowl with salt and red pepper flakes.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp in a single layer and cook for about 1-2 minutes per side until just cooked through. They will be added to the sauce after, so make sure not to overcook. Remove and set aside.
Add the olive oil to the skillet. Once hot add the onions and cook for 4-6 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Add the wine to the pan and use it to deglaze the pan, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
Add the tomatoes, Calabrian chilies (or red pepper flakes), and Italian seasoning. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. It should thicken slightly. Taste and adjust heat level if needed.
Add the shrimp to the sauce and cook for about one minute. Garnish with fresh parsley and basil. Shrimp Fra Diavolo is traditionally served with pasta.
