Recipe

My grandmother made the most amazing homemade chunky applesauce when I was growing up that made it really hard for me to ever eat prepared apple sauce. When I asked her about the recipe, I learned that it was shockingly simple and with a few small adjustments, a great 0 point weight watchers dish. I eat this homemade apple sauce all the time with Greek yogurt, warm over vanilla ice cream, or on it’s own. This recipe is very versatile and will work with almost any fruit and is also easy to convert to a quick chutney by adding spices. For example, to make an easy apple chutney to serve with chicken or pork, I would use the same recipe (w/out the vanilla) and add a small chopped yellow onion, a cup of white vinegar, 3 pieces of ginger root, and 1/2 tsp of cardamon, and then cook the same way.

Directions

  1. Chop your apples into small pieces, about 1/4 inch, and drop into the slow cooker. I like mine with the skins intact but you could also peel them. The skins contains lots of great nutrients.
  2. Add splenda sugar blend, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice, and vanilla and stir so the apples are well coated.
  3. Turn your slow cooker to high and cook for between 2.5 to 3 hours until apples are tender.
  4. You can also make this on the stove top. Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan and cook on low heat for between 30-45 minutes.
