Slice the English cucumbers very thin and place in a colander or mesh strainer. Toss with 1 tbsp of salt and let sit for 20 minutes. This will help remove some of the water. Dry well.
In a bowl, whisk together the dill, white vinegar, salt, pepper, and sugar. Add the red onion and cucumbers and mix well. Let sit for at least 15 minutes before serving.
