Sometimes there is nothing better than curling up on the couch with Asian takeout. I am not sure what it is (or how it started) but there is just something strangely comforting about a blanket, a great movie, and digging into takeout boxes while the night slips away. Or maybe I am just overly influenced by the TV and movies that constantly portray this (Sex and the City, Seinfeld…). I have also recently become a bit enamored with the idea of throwing a dinner party and serving everything from takeout boxes with chopsticks, but that’s a story for another day. I endlessly think about dinner parties but hardly ever plan a thing.
No matter what your plans, consider substituting in these delicious and healthy Asian meals for their calorie laden counterparts. Also if you are looking for more healthy Asian recipes, I highly suggest this cookbook from Steamy Kitchen she’s a genius.
1. Sesame Chicken, 5 PointsPlus, 180 calories
This recipe is one of the most popular I have ever posted and there is a reason why. With under 200 calories and packed with flavor, this sweet sesame chicken dish makes a perfect healthy meal. Make up a big batch and use the leftovers for lettuce wraps, rice bowls, and Asian inspired sandwiches with crunchy veggies and spicy sauce.
2. Skinny Egg Rolls, 2 PointsPlus, 85 calories
There is nothing better than a crunchy egg roll to accompany an Asian meal, but the deep frying makes them full of fat and calories. These egg rolls are baked or lightly pan fried to create the crispy exterior without all the grease. Fill them with the classic cabbage and carrot combination or dream up your own creation.
3. Peanut Noodles with Chicken, 7 PointsPlus, 298 calories
Ever since making these peanut noodles a couple of weeks ago, I have been using the sauce on everything. The peanut flavor really comes through and at under 300 calories, they are much better for you than typical peanut noodles that normally clock in around 900 calories. Add your favorite veggies and proteins for a yummy meal. You could also considering using spaghetti squash to cut down the calories even more.
4. Moo Shu Beef, 6 PointsPlus, 245 calories
Moo Shu is a classic dish made with Hoisin sauce (like Chinese Barbecue sauce), garlic, and some kind of spice. It is typically made with pork but also works great with beef, chicken, or shrimp. Made with lots of crunchy cabbage, this dish makes a great main course when paired with rice, spaghetti squash, or wrapped up in lettuce leaves.
5. Skinny Fried Rice, 3 PointsPlus, 128 calories
Every good Asian takeout night needs fried rice. This version comes in at just 128 calories as opposed to the 500+ calories found in most fried rice dishes from restaurants but doesn’t lack any flavor. Make up a big batch to serve alongside your main dishes and add any protein you like.
