One of the questions I hear most often from folks is about on-the-go eating and ideas for healthy things that you can grab and take with you to get through a long day of work, traveling, road-tripping, and more. For many of us, these types of situations can easily turn into a trip to the drive through or my personal vice of turning the office candy jar into lunch. Here are some things I like to throw into my bag for days like this. What are your favorites?
1. Umpqua Oats Salted Caramel Meltdown Oatmeal, 6-8 points per flavor, 225-300 calories
Ever since first seeing these oats a couple of years ago on a trip to visit my parents, I have been obsessed. These hearty prepacked oats come in their own portable package and just require hot water or milk to make a quick and complete meal. Even better they come in flavors like Salted Caramel Meltdown, Not So Guilty (apples, blueberries, chia seeds), Jackpot (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and pecans), and R U Nuts (walnuts, sunflower seeds, almonds and flax). I am partial to the Salted Caramel flavor but everything I have tried so far has been delicious.
2. Kashi Go Lean Crunchy Bar, 5 points plus, 220 calories
I get asked about protein and meal replacement bars a lot and these continue to be my favorite. Compared to many other bars, I love that these bars are crunchy and don’t have any chalky taste from protein powder. They are packed with 6 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein per bar and come in flavors like Caramel and Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut, and Cinnamon Coffee Cake.
3. Vanilla Roasted Almonds, 3 points, 100 calories
I constantly have 100 calorie packs of nuts in my purse in case hunger strikes when I am out and about. Usually I pack my own in little Ziplocs to cut down on costs, but recently I fell in love with these new Vanilla Roasted Almonds. If you want something slightly sweet, these are a great solution. I also love some of their other savory flavors but the vanilla is something I haven’t seen anywhere else.
4. Fiber One Protein Peanut Butter or Coconut Almond Chewy Bars, 4 points, 140 calories
Any time I am thinking about on-the-go meals or snacks, I usually always try to reach for something high in protein, fiber, or ideally both. This way I know I will be satisfied for awhile and not be reaching for another bag of 100 calorie chips twenty minutes later. I just tried these new Fiber One protein bars and was surprised at how good they were. Coated in chocolate and with flavors like Coconut Almond, they make a great on-the-go snack in a pinch.
5. Buffalo Chicken Tender Bites Jerky, 1 point per ounce, 60 calories
I am a little embarrassed about my love of anything jerky. Seriously, I can’t get enough of it and it is one of my absolute favorite road trip snacks. Once I even brought it to a movie, although I wouldn’t recommend that since that classic “beef jerky” smell tends to attract unwanted attention. And not the good kind. Recently I found this new buffalo chicken jerky and it is seriously delicious. If you love buffalo chicken, give this stuff a go. You won’t regret it.
