Do you ever wish you were from somewhere else? Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved growing up in a small town (we only had one stop light) in Massachusetts where doors didn’t have to be locked, the leaves changed colors, and your teacher not only taught you, but your Mom, and maybe your grandmother. But a couple of days ago when I made these Cajun shrimp, I wished for just a moment that I had grown up making these shrimp, going to crayfish boils, and talking with a much more interesting accent. I may or may not have had blues on as well. Sometimes I take recipes a little too far.

Today’s recipe is for a simple and delicious steamed Cajun shrimp. I like to make my own spice blend, but you can also just use 4 tbsp of Old Bay and a touch of hot sauce if you like. Want to make a meal out of it? Double the beer, the spices, and use 3 cups of water. Throw in some small red potatoes and half ears of corn, and add the shrimp for the last five minutes of cooking and you have a solid shrimp boil on your hands. You just need some newspaper.

  • 3/4 cup Sierra Nevada ale (or other dark beer)
  • 1 lb shrimp
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/2 tbsp paprika
  • 1/2 tbsp celery salt
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 U Juice of 1 lemon

  1. In a medium sauce pan bring the beer, water, lemon juice, and all of the spices to a boil.
  2. When it comes to a boil, turn it down to a simmer and add the shrimp.
  3. Cover and cook for 4-6 minutes until the shrimp are opaque, pink, and cooked through.
  4. Serve hot or cold. If serving hot consider serving over rice and using the leftover sauce for the rice.
