Homemade Irish brown soda bread that comes together in under 1 hour – nothing could be better. I have always loved Irish brown bread, which is a think, hearty bread that tastes great with anything from jam to cheddar cheese or dunked in soup – it’s kind of dreamy and one of the simplest things to make. This bread is best when made with coarse whole wheat flour, but will work great with any normal whole wheat flour.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour (you could also use 3 cups whole wheat flour and 1 cup unbleached white bread flour)
  • 1 U egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, sift and mix together the dry ingredients and set aside. In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, egg, molasses, and 1 3/4 cup of buttermilk.
  2. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients slowly and mix together until combined. The dough should be sticky and wet, just to the point of being able to thickly pour it into the bread tin. If the dough is too thick, add buttermilk until you read the right consistency. (I ended up needing to add about 1/4 cup)
  3. Bake for 50 minutes in the oven. Enjoy!
