I am always on the lookout for new, easy, and healthy dishes that I can whip up in under 20 minutes. This meal fits the bill and is a great twist on traditional lettuce wraps. The recipe uses Hoisin sauce, which is a great trick for adding lots of flavor to any quick stir-fry or Asian inspired meal. Hoisin is sort of like a Chinese barbecue sauce made with soybeans, vinegar, sugar, garlic, and various spices. It is dark reddish brown, sweet & spicy, and usually can be found in the Asian area of your local supermarket. Try it out in this recipe and consider using it as a flavor source, glaze, or condiment next time you want an Asian inspired meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup carrots, minced
  • 1 U clove minced garlic
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 lb 99% lean ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 U bunch kale

Directions

  1. Heat the sesame oil over medium high heat.
  2. Add the red onion, carrot, garlic, and ginger and cook for 3 minutes.
  3. Add the turkey and brown until cooked completely.
  4. Stir in the hoisin and tomato sauce. Cook for 2 more minutes.
  5. Turn off heat and squeeze in lime juice. Serve in lettuce wraps with your favorite toppings.
