Friday Five: Weight Watchers Dips, Revisited

Let’s be honest, what is better than dip. For real, I could eat it all day, every day. Just the mere act of dipping something makes everything better. This may be why there are just as many condiments in my fridge as real food. I think I may have a bit of a problem. Today’s post was inspired by this amazing book, Skinny Dips by Diana Morgan, I saw and immediately bought in my local food store. The promise of a book full of recipes for dips that are low calorie is great and so far it has delivered. So for today’s Friday Five, let’s celebrate dips!

1. Chorizo con Queso Dip, 49 calories, 1 weight watchers points plus or Curry Pumpkin Hummus, 36 calories, 1 weight watchers pointsplus
These recipes are both from the Skinny Dips book but also available on her website if you want to give them a try. The chorizo con queso dip was an instant hit in my house, and although the rest of my family wasn’t loving the pumpkin hummus, I sure was. Just the right balance of sweet and savory.

2. Buffalo Wing Hummus, 2 weight watchers points plus, 73 calories
I love this buffalo wing hummus more and more everyday, especially when I mix in some blue cheese crumbles. With carrots and celery it is a perfect snack and it also is really great on sandwiches.

3. Skinny Queso, 1 weight watcher points plus, 75 calories
This is another dip that I make almost every weekend since it is a big hit in my house. It has a ton of cheesy flavor and the right amount of spice and no one would every believe that it was low fat. What’s even better is that it is only 1 point for 1/4 cup so it’s ok to indulge.

4. Baba Ghanoush, 75 calories, 1 weight watcher points plus
Baba Ghanoush is kind of like hummus except in place of chickpeas you use eggplant. Blended with tahini, pine nuts, and a little lemon it makes a great dip or sandwich spread. This recipe from Cooking Light makes a delicious, lower calorie Baba Ghanoush that still has lots of flavor without all the fat or oil.

5. Dark Chocolate Brownie Dip, 2 weight watchers points plus per 2 tbsp
If you are looking for a sweet dip to eat with fruit or cookies or just by the spoonful, this dark chocolate brownie dip is delicious. It is another recipe that somehow uses a base of garbanzo beans but you would never know it. Delicious and easy to make.

And if you are going to dive into dip making, it is wise to use a food processor, or if you really want to splurge VitaMix, it is almost impossible any other way and for some reason for me they just don’t turn out the same in the blender.

But what do you dip in them?! Are tortilla chips healthy?

You can use baked tortilla chips either from the store or make your own at home. I also use veggies, fruit, pretzels, and make my own baked pita chips for dipping.
